Babylon was not rich in natural resources. No forests and mines, very poor rainfall and not located near any natural trading route. Babylon only had fertile soil and the Euphrates river.

All other resources were man made. The people from Babylon diverted water from the river via dams and irrigation channels. Babylon became one of the wealthiest cities in the world.

Today Babylon is the dry desert it once was. From the ruins, these people were educated people who lived in walled cities. It seemed these people were the first engineers, astronomers, mathematicians and financiers. Libraries of clay tablets were found. Babylonians were skilled in sculpture, painting, weaving, gold work, jewellers etc. It is also believed that they were the original inventors of money as a means of exchange, promissory notes and written titles to property. These Babylonians maintained the city for thousands of years until the army was defeated by Cyrus who took possession and allowed the city to wane away until it was eventually abandoned.
